What is Cadmium?

Cadmium is found mainly as a by-product of zinc mining and shares many of the same properties. It is a white metal with a blue tinge that is so soft, it can be cut with a knife. Cadmium is of strategic importance in the aircraft and military industry, due to its excellent corrosion resistance, solderability and ductility properties; it is also used for electroplating alloys. Cadmium also plays a role in the fabrication of Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries and in cadmium telluride solar panels. Other applications for cadmium are decreasing due to competing technologies and cadmium’s toxic nature.
